My name is Luke Mercier. I am a violin restorer, skilled in all manner of restoration, as well as in the building of all instruments from the violin family. I have built many violins, violas, cello and double-bass.

In 1991, I began my training in the renowned restoration rooms of George Heinl & Co. Ltd in Toronto, Canada, where I remained as a full time employee until 2006.

In 2006, we established a home-based studio in Spring Brook, Ontario, situated in rural Hastings County, also known as the cheese capital of Canada.

My continuing involvement with Heinls has garnered me with the great opportunity to restore and assist with routine maintenance of the celebrated instruments that comprise The Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank.

My Music History

Music has also played a significant role in my life beginning with classical piano from an early age. In 1990 I began piano studies in the studio of the late Antonin Kubalek at The Royal Conservatory of Music Toronto. During the early 90’s, I composed a few keyboard compositions for Kubalek which were performed to critical acclaim. Other early compositions were performed by The Gryphon Trio and also Martin Beaver / Jaimie Parker Duo.

In the late 1990’s to present, I have grown a reputation as a fiddle, banjo and guitar player immersed in traditional and original Folk Music with a more recent focus on the West African Music of Mali.
